Location

Open the tailgate and lift the carpeted trim panel on the right side of the luggage compartment, next to the right rear wheel housing. Unclip the black plastic cover to expose the fuse box; the fuse map is printed on the underside of the cover.

The X5 E70 carries its battery in the luggage compartment, so this box doubles as the main power distribution point and includes several high-current maxi fuses alongside the relays for the fuel pump, cooling fan and starter. Always disconnect the battery's negative terminal before working near the maxi fuses, and never substitute a higher-rated fuse even temporarily. Fuse assignment varies by equipment level and production year. Always confirm with the label on the fuse box cover or the owner's manual.
