Blend door actuator (HVAC flap motor)

Also known as: HVAC actuator, temperature flap motor, mode door actuator, recirculation flap motor, air distribution servo

Definition

Blend door actuators are small electric motors with a plastic gear train and a position feedback potentiometer (or LIN-controlled electronics) mounted on the HVAC box that move the flaps controlling air temperature (blending heated and cooled air), air distribution (face, feet, screen) and recirculation; a car may have four to eight of them, some only reachable with the dashboard out. Gear teeth strip and the potentiometer wears, producing the classic clicking or ticking noise behind the dash when the temperature or mode is changed, air stuck on hot or cold on one side (dual-zone cars), air coming from the wrong vents, or no response to the recirculation button. The HVAC module detects an actuator that does not reach its commanded position and logs a fault; many systems need a calibration run after battery disconnection or actuator replacement, started with a scan tool or a button combination on the climate panel, during which each flap is driven to its end stops. Before replacing an actuator, confirm it has power and ground and that the flap itself is not broken or obstructed by debris in the box. Codes: manufacturer B-codes such as B1xxx-B2xxx (actuator position error, feedback circuit), VAG 00xxx-series for V68/V70/V85 motors, Ford B1253/B1261, GM B0229-B0423, LIN communication codes for smart actuators.
