What it means

Shift solenoid A is one of the on/off or PWM solenoids the TCM energises in combinations to route hydraulic pressure for each gear. P0750 sets when the TCM detects an electrical fault in the solenoid A circuit (wrong current, open or short) or when the hydraulic result of the commanded state does not produce the expected gear ratio. The TCM then substitutes a safe gear pattern (limp mode).

Symptoms

  • Transmission stuck in one gear or skipping gears (e.g. 1-4 only)
  • Harsh or delayed shifts, especially when cold
  • Engine RPM high at low speed, poor acceleration
  • No kickdown on full throttle
  • MIL on, often together with a ratio code P0731-P0734

Common causes

  1. Solenoid coil open or shorted from heat and age
  2. Solenoid mechanically stuck by varnish or debris from worn clutches
  3. Internal transmission harness chafed or connector pins corroded (fluid wicking)
  4. External wiring or TCM connector damage
  5. Low or burnt fluid restricting solenoid operation
  6. TCM driver transistor failure

How to diagnose

  1. Read the solenoid status and commanded gear on the scan tool; note whether the fault is electrical (sets at key-on) or functional (sets only during a particular shift).
  2. Disconnect the transmission connector and measure solenoid A resistance: on/off solenoids usually 10-25 ohms, PWM/linear types 3-8 ohms at 20 °C; compare with the identical solenoids in the pack (difference over 10 % is suspect).
  3. Check for shorts: resistance from each solenoid pin to case must be infinite; measure wiring from TCM to connector for continuity under 1 ohm and insulation.
  4. Actuate solenoid A with the scan tool while listening with a stethoscope or watching the current trace; a clean 0.5-1.2 A pulse means the coil works, mechanical sticking requires removal.
  5. Check for fluid in the connector (wicking through the harness) and inspect pan debris; heavy debris means the solenoid is a symptom, not the cause.
  6. Replace the solenoid or solenoid pack with new fluid and filter, reset adaptations and perform the adaptive drive cycle.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace just one solenoid?

On many transmissions yes, if it is sold individually; on mechatronic units the solenoids are calibrated to the valve body and come as a pack or require coding of the new unit.

Why did P0750 appear after a fluid change?

Fresh fluid with detergent can dislodge varnish that then jams a solenoid, or the service disturbed a brittle internal harness. Both are repairable without an overhaul.
