Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1)
What it means
The position sensor on the intake manifold flap shaft reports the actual flap angle so the ECM can verify its commands. P2015 sets when the sensor voltage is outside the learned end stops, does not reach the expected value when the flaps are commanded, or changes implausibly. It is the most common manifold code on VAG and other 2.0 TDI engines and usually indicates worn flap bearings rather than a bad sensor.
Symptoms
- MIL on, often intermittent at first then permanent
- Slight loss of low-rpm torque and lazy throttle response
- Rough cold idle for the first minute
- Code returns within one or two drive cycles after clearing
- No noticeable symptom in many cases apart from the lamp
Common causes
- Worn plastic flap shaft bearings in the manifold letting the shaft wobble and shifting the sensor reading
- Carbon build-up restricting flap travel so the sensor never reaches the end stop
- Position sensor potentiometer worn or contaminated
- Actuator motor weak or linkage loose, slow to reach position
- Wiring chafe or connector corrosion on the 5 V reference, signal or ground
- Adaptation not performed after manifold or actuator replacement
How to diagnose
- Read the actual position PID at idle and during actuation: expect around 0.5-1.0 V (flaps closed) to 3.5-4.5 V (flaps open), or roughly 5-95 %; a value that drifts between readings at the same command indicates shaft play.
- Watch the sensor voltage while the engine runs at idle; fluttering of more than 0.2 V without a command change confirms worn bearings letting the shaft vibrate.
- Perform the actuator basic setting; if the ECM aborts with 'end stops not reached' or 'range too small', the flap travel is restricted by carbon or linkage wear.
- Check the sensor circuit: 5.0 V reference, ground under 0.1 V, signal wire continuity under 1 ohm; wiggle the connector while watching the value.
- With the manifold removed, check shaft play by hand; more than about 0.5 mm radial play or visible oval bearing bores means manifold replacement or a bearing repair kit.
- After replacing the manifold or actuator, perform the adaptation (basic setting), clear the code and confirm with two drive cycles.
Frequently asked questions
Will replacing the sensor alone fix P2015?
Rarely. In most cases the plastic bearings in the manifold are worn and the shaft moves, so the sensor reports a different value each time. Repair brackets that relocate the sensor or a new manifold are the lasting fixes.
Why does the code return after clearing?
The ECM re-checks the flap end stops at every start. Until the mechanical play or travel restriction is removed, the plausibility test fails again.
