P2111
Generic (SAE)
Throttle Actuator Control System Stuck Open
Severity
High
Typical repair cost
60 – 600 EUR
System
Powertrain
What it means
P2111 is logged when the ECM commands the throttle plate toward closed but the position sensors report it remains more open than the target by a defined margin. Because an open throttle that cannot be closed is a safety issue, the ECM cuts fuel to limit RPM (fuel-cut limp mode) and may shut the engine down. Causes range from carbon deposits and a weak return spring to a failed motor or gear train.

Symptoms
- High idle of 1500-2500 rpm that does not drop when warm
- Engine surges and cuts out rhythmically as fuel is cut to limit RPM
- Engine warning/EPC lamp on, reduced power or no response to pedal
- Engine shuts down on its own after a few seconds (fail-safe)
- Hard engine braking lost, car feels like it is pushing on
Common causes
- Carbon or oil deposits wedging the plate open near the closed stop
- Broken or weak throttle return spring
- Stripped plastic gears or worn brushes in the throttle motor so it cannot close the plate
- Foreign object (piece of air filter, insect nest) between plate and bore
- Wiring fault reversing or opening one motor lead
- Throttle position sensor failure reporting a false open angle
How to diagnose
- Key on, engine off: read TPS1/TPS2 and commanded position; if commanded is 0-2 % and actual shows 15 % or more, the plate is physically held open or the sensor is wrong.
- Remove the intake duct and look at the plate position; it should rest at the limp-home angle (about 7-10 % open). Press the plate gently closed and release: it must return to the same angle under spring force, not stay closed.
- Inspect for deposits, foreign objects or a loose plate screw; clean carefully with throttle cleaner without soaking the motor or sensor.
- Actuator test: command 0 % and 100 % and watch the plate; a motor that buzzes but does not move the plate has stripped gears, a silent motor indicates an open winding or wiring fault (check 1-5 ohms across the motor pins and continuity to the ECM).
- Verify the position sensor by comparing TPS1 and TPS2: their sum should remain about 5 V across the range; a mismatch over 0.1-0.2 V means the sensor is faulty.
- After cleaning or replacement perform the throttle adaptation/basic setting, clear codes and confirm idle returns to specification (typically 650-850 rpm warm).
Frequently asked questions
Is a stuck-open throttle dangerous?
The ECM protects against runaway by cutting fuel, so the engine will not race uncontrollably, but power delivery is erratic and the car can stall in traffic. Do not keep driving.
Can I clean the throttle body without a scan tool?
You can clean it, but most cars need an adaptation afterwards or the ECM will keep the old closed-position value and may log P2111 or a high-idle fault again.
