Known weak points
- Intake manifold swirl-flap motors and linkages failing (P2015/P2016), with rough running and the glow-plug light; whole manifolds are often replaced
- Clogged EGR valves and coolers on both banks, causing black smoke, poor pick-up and frequent DPF regenerations
- Injector and high-pressure fuel leaks at the rail seals and return lines, smelt as diesel after a hot run
- Variable-geometry turbo actuator and vane sticking, leading to limp mode under load
- Multitronic CVT control unit and clutch pack failures on front-wheel-drive cars; tiptronic torque-converter shudder on quattro
- Oil cooler and front cam-cover seals leaking oil down the back of the engine, often mistaken for a rear main seal
