Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor

Also known as: manifold pressure sensor, vacuum sensor

Definition

The MAP sensor measures absolute pressure in the intake manifold, from deep vacuum at idle to above atmospheric under boost on turbocharged engines. The ECU uses it to calculate engine load and, with intake temperature and RPM, to estimate air mass (speed-density) when there is no MAF or to cross-check the MAF. With key on, engine off it should read barometric pressure (about 100 kPa at sea level); at warm idle a naturally aspirated engine shows 30-40 kPa. Faults include a cracked vacuum hose, carbon-clogged port on diesels, and sensor drift that causes rough idle, poor fuel economy and wrong boost control. Codes: P0105-P0109; on turbo engines P0234/P0299 if the ECU sees unexpected boost.
