Idle Air Control System RPM Lower Than Expected
What it means
The ECM targets a specific idle speed (typically 650-850 rpm warm) and adjusts the idle air control valve or the electronic throttle to hold it. P0506 is set when the actual idle rpm stays below target by more than roughly 100-200 rpm for a set time, even though the ECM has opened the idle control to its limit. This means something is restricting airflow or loading the engine more than the control range can compensate: a dirty throttle body, blocked idle passage, sticking IAC valve or a mechanical drag.
Symptoms
- Idle too low, engine shakes or lugs at idle
- Stalling when coming to a stop, especially with AC or steering load
- Dips in rpm when electrical loads (lights, rear demister) switch on
- Rough idle after cold start, improves at higher rpm
- Check engine light
Common causes
- Carbon buildup in the throttle body or idle air bypass passage restricting air at closed throttle
- Idle air control valve sticking or sluggish (carbon on the pintle or stepper motor)
- Clogged PCV valve or breather system, or a restricted air filter
- Electronic throttle body needing adaptation after cleaning, battery disconnect or ECM replacement
- Excessive engine load at idle: dragging AC compressor, failing alternator, power steering pump or binding accessory
- Vacuum leak that confuses adaptive idle learning, or an exhaust restriction
How to diagnose
- Read live data at warm idle: target rpm versus actual rpm, and the idle control position (IAC steps or duty cycle, or throttle angle). A control value at or near its maximum (e.g. IAC over 80 percent, throttle over 5 degrees at idle) with low rpm confirms the ECM has run out of range.
- Remove the intake duct and inspect the throttle plate and bore for carbon. Clean with throttle body cleaner and a soft cloth; on electronic throttles do not force the plate by hand.
- Test the IAC valve where fitted: remove and check the pintle moves freely; measure stepper coil resistance (typically 10-20 ohm per winding on GM/Delphi types, 20-50 ohm on solenoid types). Clean or replace a sticking valve.
- Check the PCV valve rattles freely and the breather hoses are clear; replace a clogged air filter.
- Load check: at idle switch on AC, full steering lock and electrical loads one by one while watching rpm. A big drop with one accessory points to a dragging component; check alternator output ripple and compressor drag.
- After cleaning or component replacement, perform the throttle or idle adaptation with the scan tool (or the manufacturer's relearn procedure) and confirm idle settles at target within 50 rpm with normal control values.
Frequently asked questions
Will cleaning the throttle body fix P0506?
In most cases yes, if it is followed by the idle relearn procedure. Skipping the relearn is the main reason the code returns after cleaning.
Why does the idle drop and stall only with the AC on?
The compressor adds load the idle control must compensate for. If the control is already at its limit because of a dirty throttle, the extra load pulls rpm down. Check the compressor clutch and refrigerant charge too.
Is a low idle harmful?
A slightly low idle is not damaging, but stalling in traffic is a safety issue, and prolonged lugging can shake engine mounts loose. Address it promptly.
